Meghalaya is a captivating destination full of lush landscape and unique waterfalls. It is very hard to come down to must visit or top must visit in Meghalaya as entire state is fascinating and to miss out on any attraction feels like a loss. Your visit to Meghalaya is incomplete unless you visit the capital of the state, also known as the Scotland of the East – Shillong. The place is full of natural beauty, lush greenery and peaceful aura.

Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, Laitlum Canyon and Mawphlang Sacred Forest are some of the best scenic places to be visited near Shillong.

If interested in knowing about the cultural and historical part of the state then Don Bosco Museum is really good. There is rooftop observation deck in the museum, which provides amazing 360-degree panoramic view of the city.

Then there is Ward’s lake, which is a beautiful walking and relaxing park surrounding the lake.

As Christianity dominates the places, therefore city has lot many churches. Among all the most famous one is the Cathedral Church, which is quite big, has unique structure and is quite popular.

Cherrapunji is another top must visit place in Meghalaya, as it was known as the world’s wettest place. Now it is at 2nd wettest place (1st is now near by village Māwsynrām) in the world.

Cherrapunji is breathtakingly beautiful, extremely green entirely, home to the best and cleanest waterfalls, thousands of years old naturally formed Root Bridge and magical caves. The scenic beauty of this place is out of the world and hence this should definitely be visited.

The most famous places to visit and see in Cherrapunjee is the very famous double decker root bridge (a must visit but is one of the hardest trek of 3 hours – 3000 steps, one way), Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sister waterfall, Nohkalikai Falls, Wei Sawdong, Rainbow Fall etc.

It rains almost entire time in Cherrapunji, so one needs to be prepared for this beforehand like carrying Umbrella, sudden appearance of fog- spoiling the view, disturbance in roads because of fog or rain etc.

Trip to Meghalaya will always be incomplete without visiting this place making it one of the top must visit place in Meghalaya. Dawki Village is the last village in India sharing borders with Bangladesh.

This village also separates Jaintia hills from Khasi Hills. Dawki’s Umngot River commonly known as Dawki River is undoubtedly the cleanest river in Asia.  One can clearly see the pebbles, rocks, surface at the bottom as well as the fishes swimming beneath. It sometimes gives an impression as if boat is floating in the air. The emerald green crystal clear water of Dawki looks absolutely divine and so is the surrounding area.

Trip to this place is undoubted will always be a memorable one.  You can also see Bangladesh Border, situated very close to Dawki Village.

MAWLYNNONG VILLAGE – CLEANEST VILLAGE

This is again one of the biggest highlight of Meghalaya to visit the cleanest village in Asia /India. The village sits along the border of India Bangladesh and comes under East Khasi Hills. Although small, one will be amazed to see how clean, organized and beautiful the village is.

All wastes are collected on cone shaped bamboo bins (placed at regular intervals) and then later used as manure for the soil. The village truly sets an example for entire nation. There is a nominal entry price to pay for entering the village. There are numerous homestays for tourist to stay in and interact with locals. No prior bookings required, can be easily arranged on the spot.

The Single Living Root Bridge is a must visit attraction near by the village. Comparing to double decker root bridge of Cherrapunji, it is just a small easy trek of just 15 mins. For all those people who cant make it to Double Decker Root Bridge, this is their resort.
